STEP BY STEP PROGRESSIONS:

To work on body control during kids play have them try this:

YOU can make a big difference in your youngster's body control during their play.

This task sets up a problem and the child's skills will allow him to solve it at their current level of mastery

PROBLEM: Can you hold yourself on your arms while the HELPER Lifts your BODY
~ Straight as a log?

Use a balance beam, for the extra workout practice, if available.

START Position: For CHILD: Have them lie tummy down on the ground/floor.
For YOU: Stand over the child's legs at the ankle level.

ASK the child to place their palms FLAT on the ground.
Palms under the shoulders.

  1. YOU: reach for the mid-calf and GRIP each leg firmly!
  2. LIFT the legs and the body until the child's body is slightly sloped.
  3. CHILD: Straighten the arms completely and KEEP the body STIFF!
  4. Say: You are the wheelbarrow now!
  5. Wiggle the CHILD [a little] too test the strength of the wheelbarrow.
  6. TRY to get the wheelbarrow rolling...
    encourage the child to wlak on ther hands/arms as you hold the mid-calf securely.
  7. You control the child's weight and balance.
  8. Move slowly and try to fell a strong body and arm support.
  9. Repeat and try to build sequence into an easy pattern.
  10. Make this task harder by using a balance beam for the child's hand support surface ~ see picture above.

Note: Softly, make suggestions: keep back stretched, shoulders level, arms straight.

TASK OBJECTIVE: Development of body awareness and strength. This will help the child manage their body in dynamic motion. Arm strength is developed as well as the strengthing of the torso.

Teaching Hints for Turning Kids Exercise into Building Brain Times

  • The senses will connect the muscles to the brain as the child strives to maintain their balance.
  • Make sure that the practice times for this task are SHORT and happy!
